I am Thilini Wijesekera and I recently completed my final year in MArch Architecture. The vision of my project is to create a sustainable connection between local food production and the city. This vision will be achieved through upgrading the Coventry Market to provide a dedicated space to maximise, predominately the local farm-based food supply to the fullest potential in combination with providing tailored access to the local community in this dedicated space. The project aims to
bring the negotiation, chaos, spontaneous environment and social interactions which are the qualities associated with a market,
bring the countryside to the city while breaking the sheer invisibility of the food production process, allowing people to witness the important stages of food production,
create a new food landscape and recreate some of the old market spaces with a blend of contemporary design,
and contribute to the reduction of global warming and the climate-changing crisis. Throughout my project, I have attempted to create a sustainable environmentally friendly design as a responsible designer.
The design will be comprised of pragmatic agricultural buildings, an outdoor food parliament, a biodigester plant, and greenhouses with demonstration gardens.
