Jenny Suffield is a part time student, half way through the MA Painting course and will be graduating in 2022. Her work is about her domestic life and surroundings. She uses her family as models, exploring their development and interactions. The present is significant in the work, with each piece a snapshot used to reflect the changes that occur in the domestic environment.
“As a parent I am an observer, seeing the changes and development of children growing to young adults within the world and space of the home. I want to show how behaviours change, not just to remember, but to notice the present.”
The ‘Hug’ series depicts the physical contact between Mother and older child. Hugs become less frequent as the child grows to independence and adulthood. This theme has been made more poignant and more resonant recently with the COVID19 pandemic and social distancing, where people have been denied the physical act of a hug.
