History & Politics

Including, History, Politics and History & Politics

Both History and Politics tend to be defined by who has the loudest voice: either the person about whom the best records are kept, or the person standing at a pulpit in front of an eager crowd. It is a testament to the work produced by the BA Politics and BA History students showcased here that those voices that have traditionally been silenced – from enslaved Americans to the intentionally quiet lobbyists who like to work in the shadows – are consistently foregrounded. Our students understand that the past influences our lived experience of the present and that our living today changes how we understand what has gone before. Some of the questions our students ask – about, for example, the role of far right populism in political life, or the long shadow of racism – are very old, but the students approach them in incredibly new and exciting ways.
