Outside In - Lead Image showing a bright frosted window at night with flowers pressing against it from the inside

Emma Giordano is an Italian photographer whose practice explores the intersections of landscape and documentary photography, focusing on observing the everyday environment around her. Using her photography to understand complex emotions, her recent project centres around a voyeuristic search for connection in an urban setting.

"Outside In" is the journey of an unnamed individual wandering through the city, lost and alone, in search of human connection. The series explores the feeling of not belonging to a place, but desperately wanting to. Filled with loneliness of always looking from the outside in on other people's lives, the individual tries to escape this isolation, bringing the viewer along to their late-night walks. These become a voyeuristic search, as the individual gazes in strangers' windows looking for traces of life. The photographs of curtained windows hold an air of suspense and mystery, as anyone could be right behind, ready to bridge the gap and connect with the individual. The glass creates a physical barrier, and a possible connection is close, but always just a step out of reach. With a focus on the light emitting from the windows, Emma Giordano creates a story of someone looking for the human connection they desperately crave.
