James Torrens

MDes / BA (Hons) Product Design

I am a product designer from Cambridge with a with a strong eye for detail and a passion for initial design development and model making.

In my third year of university I was lucky enough to have an internship at Samsonite in Belgium, working with the American Tourister design team. Designing updates of existing products and developing new products, ranging from backpacks, duffel bags, soft sided and hard sided suitcases. Working hand-in-hand with the marketing team with live briefs, throughout the design phases and communicating with our manufacturing partners in China and India. We collaborated with and presented our work to international clients, as well as the managers and CEO's of the company. This gave me a great understanding of this fast-paced design industry and improved my ability to deliver to the client's brief.

Avid (achieving vital innovation in Dharavi) is an electric hob and battery charging system for electricity in deprived communities of Dharavi in Mumbai, India. The focus was to create a product as sustainable as possible, using the existing large scale recycling resourcefulness and their thriving hub of industry, whilst delivering a major contribution to these communities and their families.

An important focus of Avid is to work within the local environment to produce the materials and to manufacture the product.
