The power of expectation
The expectations of those we love is a powerful force. So much of who we are is based on other people's opinions of what we should be rather than our own aspirations and it is this concept of self repression that concerns me. I have narrowed the focus of my investigation to the building blocks of daily life such as words, forms, light and darkness but, more specifically, the presence or absence of these concepts and how this reflects the world around us. In doing so, I feel I have gained a deeper knowledge of the female experience of my own family and how this very personal history has shaped my life today. With this in mind, I have worked extensively with projection, hoping to transfer this knowledge into my surroundings and finally breathe life into the words and experiences of my grandmother who, like so many other women, has been controlled and oppressed by expectation.
