Foundation Diploma Art, Design & Media
In this work, I have endeavoured to construct an abstract self-portrait that conveys my responses
and experiences on different days and throughout my life, a little like a snapshot into my brain.
Using a variety of materials to encourage depth and a rigid structure (the cubes) to hold itself and
the others around it up, this is how I am able to represent the overwhelming chaos of each cube
coming together as my mind is trapped in a solid form. I experimented with whatever colours and
mediums came to mind in an effort to convey an honest perspective on my mind process and how
complex and overwhelming things can become. I primarily use paper because it is easily malleable
but also reliably sound, it is receptive to a vast amount of different mediums and can be used to
show fluid mark making quickly and easily. However, by using different mediums to contrast the
paper, I could create more depth and opportunities to open up my final structure.
