Recently home from a year working in France, I joined Coventry University in September 2017, studying for a BA in French and International Relations. In sixth form, the enthusiasm of the sociology head of department at school had driven my keen interest in global social issues and the devastating impacts of inequality, poverty and oppression. This reflected the ceaseless discussions of politics and social justice round the dinner table at home, and my emerging interest in all things French: people, language, history and France's place on the world stage. With a growing need to understand the world around me, the third year of my BA course featured an Erasmus year at Université Grenoble Alpes – an ideal environment to plan my final year dissertation. That dissertation – examining the response of France and other western countries to the appalling and endemic crime of female genital mutilation (FGM) – illustrates my developing understanding of the distorting effect of international politics on social issues and my increasing disquiet about the omnipresent repression of women. My research revealed the disturbing and shameful legacies of France and other western countries and affirmed my suspicions that FGM is a battle that is far from won.

This dissertation considers the involvement of western countries in the fight against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), the role of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in tackling the practice and why the total, global eradication of FGM has still not been achieved. Using France and its colonial history as an illustration, qualitative research was carried out to identify the scope of ex-colonial independence treaties, subsequent legislation and links to human rights declarations. This sought to uncover any direct connection between the responsibilities identified and the two main aspects of present-day campaigns against FGM: legislation, and in-country work carried out by NGOs.
